Tonight, I have the pleasure of speaking at the Singleton Women in Business networking event. I named my short presentation 'From "Baby Brain" to Business Thinking' - a reflection on my parental leave experience.
I'm sure my story will sound similar to many other women's stories out there. I went on parental leave, loved my time at home with my little one, started contemplating life and decided I wanted to do something a bit different with my time. To be clear: I didn't abandon my corporate career. I just decided to take an extended period of parental leave which allowed me to throw all my [what remained once the little one was in bed] energy into my Pilates business!
From the initial decision to turn my ABN into more than just a number to now has been an awesome journey. I've learned more about marketing and done it all myself - including design logos and creative pieces that normally would be sent to a creative agency [ahem: small business = more realistic budget].
I've also been branding something entirely new to me: ME.
That's right. When building a small business centred around you, building the brand becomes all about you as well. That can be a bit daunting, but it's also extremely rewarding. To that end, I've recently decided to become a Brand Ambassador for the clothing line Just Strong, because it speaks to my values. More on that in a future post... ;)
I'm looking forward to sharing my story with the other women in the room tonight, and I'm especially keen to hear whether they've done something similar, what their experience has been like, and - what we all want to know - how are THEY managing to find that elusive work-life balance? I don't think I have the answer but I will be putting forward some ideas tonight.
Oh - and yes. Of course. I will be promoting WINE BARRE this evening and a bottle of Drayton's wine may or may not be a door prize.... If you haven't purchased your ticket yet, what are you waiting for? www.stickytickets.com.au/77085.
