Did you know that the average person puts on up to 4 kilograms (almost 9 pounds) in winter?
I totally get that it's a great time to stay inside, watch movies with high calorie snacks (hot chocolate - umm!) and then hide any weight gain under layers of bulky material. But... How discouraging is it to then have to work off that winter weight gain in order to feel good in your swimsuit once the warmer weather returns?
Here are some great reasons to stay fit this winter - and every winter, really! (credit: www.livelifegetactive.com)
The sun is more of a friend than your heater. There's a reason it's called the sunshine vitamin.
Beat the winter blues.
Take a deep breath.
Avoid winter weight gain.
Yes, the sun goes down earlier, which means it's even less motivating to go for an after-work walk or run. And regardless of whether you prefer exercising in the early morning hours or in the evening, you're going to be heading out in the dark.
Here are some tips to help you stick to your exercise routine:1.
1. Find something you ENJOY doing... you will want to stick with it year-round, regardless of the season.
2. Find an exercise buddy and keep each other honest!
3. Get yourself some new, season-appropriate active wear - new clothing tends to encourage you to find an excuse to wear it! Where better to show off your workout style than at a gym or a class?
4. Give yourself a rest when you need one. It's OK to take a short break from exercise. I'm particularly mindful of not working out when I'm feeling fatigued as it has led to an injury once before. I'd rather rest up than hurt myself, which could put me out of commission for weeks!
